+ What is art therapy?

  • Art therapy engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone. Kinesthetic, sensory, perceptual, and symbolic opportunities invite alternative modes of receptive and expressive communication which can circumvent the limitations of language. Visual and symbolic language gives voice to experience and empowers individual, communal, and societal transformation. (AATA) You can use a variety of mediums, and you don’t have to identity has an artist to benefit. Simply put, when words are not enough, art therapy enters in.

+ What is somatic psychotherapy?

  • The theory behind somatic therapy is that the mind, body, spirit, and emotions are all related and connected to each other. As a result, the stress of past emotional and traumatic events affects the central nervous system and can cause changes in the body. Through developing awareness of the mind-body connection and using specific interventions, somatic therapy helps you to release the tension, anger, frustration and other emotions that remain in your body from past negative or traumatic experiences. In my work, I use deep breathing, relaxation exercises, meditation, yoga and embodied movement as parts of this approach.

+ What is mindfulness?

  • The quality of being present and fully engaged with whatever we are doing at the moment- free from distraction or judgement- aware of our thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them.

+ What is narrative therapy?

  • Narrative therapy is centered around the stories that we develop within ourselves and carry through our lives. We give meaning to our personal experiences and these meanings that we come up with, or that have been placed on us by others, influence how we see ourselves and the world around us. It separates people from their problems, is empowering, and non pathologizing. Through narrative therapy, we can begin to identify alternative stories that offer us an opportunity to challenge judgment and explore what other information we are carrying within us. Exploring in this way helps us to widen our view of self, challenge old and unhealthy beliefs and to open our minds to new ways of living that reflect a more accurate and healthy story.

+ How much will therapy cost?

Therapy is a financial investment and an investment in your wellbeing. My fees are set in accordance with average market value rates for the zip codes I serve and the level of training I possess.

  • I offer all new clients a free 15 minute phone/virtual consultation to determine if we are a good fit.
  • My rate is $225 for the initial intake session (60min) and $200 for all subsequent therapy sessions (50min).
  • All payments are processed via secure Stripe credit card processing through SimplePractice, my Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • Cancellation with less than 48 hours notice - full fee.

  • A limited number of sliding scale slots are available. Please be mindful that if you request a sliding scale fee when you can truthfully afford my full fee, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility. Being honest with yourself and your financial situation when engaging with a sliding scale grows strong and sustainable communities. It also respects the work of practitioners in the healing field, like myself, who have families to support and bills to pay. Additionally, when I am paid fairly, I am able to invest more time and resources to free and lower cost offerings. (conceptualized by Alexis J. Cunningfolk of Worts & Cunning Apothecary)

+ Using Out of Network (OON) Benefits

  • Please contact your insurance company’s Member Services line prior to booking an appointment with me to determine whether they cover out-of-network benefits, should you choose to use them.
  • For clients choosing to go OON, you’ll receive a monthly superbill which you will send to your insurance company so they can reimburse you for a portion of the fee based on your benefit schedule. Please note that I do not file claims on your behalf for this and payment for services is expected to be made at the time of each appointment. You can also choose to submit your claims electronically for a fee through Reimbursify.
  • Some clients prefer to self-pay for their sessions (and not seek reimbursement from their insurance) as insurance companies require a diagnosis to justify “medically necessary” treatment, and insurances can also request access to the sensitive information clients share with their therapists.
  • If you are choosing to use OON benefits, here are some helpful questions you should ask your insurance provider prior to beginning sessions with me:

    1. Do you cover out-of-network benefits for psychotherapy, including via telehealth?

    2. What is my deductible, co-pay, or co-insurance? When does my deductible reset?

    3. What is the usual timeframe to receive reimbursement? How many sessions per calendar year are covered? Are there any limits?

    4. How do I submit my superbill each month? Is there a window for timely filing? (for example, some insurances require a client to fill out a brief subscriber claim form and mail the completed form and your superbill to health insurance. This should be done as soon as possible upon receipt of a superbill. Be sure to verify all of this with your individual plan to be certain of their protocol.)

+ What is your cancellation policy?

I require 48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session. If you miss an appointment or cancel within the 48 hours you will be charged the full session fee. Text and/or email reminders are sent to you 48 hours prior to our scheduled appointments, and I also encourage you to set up your own reminders.

+ The No Suprises Act

Notice to clients and prospective clients:

  • Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, or how to dispute a bill, see your Estimate, or visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
